Chapter Six

It was almost midnight when Rachel was awakened by an anxious yowling outside of her window.

Morgan and Leo had left hours ago, and she’d finally found a little peace from her chaotic day by taking a large swallow of Valerian sleeping potion and falling unconscious into bed.

From all appearances, she would have another long day tomorrow - and every day thereafter - until the spell to destroy Matt’s poisonous relationship at last took effect. So the last thing she wanted was an unnecessary confrontation with her mysterious shapeshifting caller.

For a while she tried to ignore the feline, but as the sound grew louder, she was afraid he would wake up her landlord.

"Oh for heaven's sake," she growled as she pulled on her robe and padded barefoot into the kitchen area.

The moment she opened the front door, a flash of brown fur raced past her and into the bathroom. Having seen Leo perform the same maneuver earlier that evening, she simply waited for him in the kitchen.

A minute passed. Then another minute. How long did it take to grow from cat sized up into a man? Leo had made the process look relatively easy.

"Are you alright?" She called impatiently. "What's taking so long? Did your tail get stuck mid-change?"

"No," a familiar voice admitted from the unlit shadows of her bedroom. "I was just standing here trying to think of something to say."

Rachel felt a rush of surprise, then pleasure, but it quickly morphed into anger.

"Tyson?"

He stepped out of the bedroom to face her, clutching another of her bath towels around his trim waist. It was going to be a busy laundry week if she spent much more time around these feline types.

It was hard to stay angry however, as her gaze snuck down to admire all of that exposed male body. He looked even better naked than he had with those expensive tailored shirts and pants he usually wore.

For spending half of his life in a furry form, he had very little natural body hair as a man. Just a thin little teaser that ran from his belly button down to vanish beneath the edge of the towel.

Those perfect abs tightened beneath her gaze, making her bite back a sigh of appreciation. Running around in cat form must be excellent cardio, because even his muscles had muscles.

Dragging her eyes back up to safer territory, she struggled to collect her thoughts and recover some of the anger that she'd felt when she learned he was the person seeking to slice and dice her family home.

"Why wouldn't you change into a man when Morgan and Leo were here?"

"At first I didn't trust your shifter friend. I've never met one outside of my own family. Then your friend started talking about that spell and I just felt overwhelmed," he admitted. "I actually left here and ran straight to the hotel, packed my car, and was planning to avoid this area for the rest of my life."

He shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, but it looked elegant and graceful on him.
